For the past three decades, Victoria Park in Hong Kong has been lit by candlelight every year to commemorate the dead and victims of the June 4 massacre. However, in 2020, the Victoria Garden candle may be lit for them for the last time. A few days ago, China announced that it would directly install a national security law for Hong Kong; the Hong Kong police refused to approve our annual vigil for the victims of the killings. Without candlelight this year, we risk being confronted with sticks, tear gas, rubber bullets, and violent police. We were not born in the era of killing, but participating in the commemoration of June 4th in Victoria Park and other places is part of our upbringing. We learned about the tragedy 31 years ago,
and learned that thousands of Chinese college students and citizens were killed by Chinese soldiers in pursuit of freedom and democracy. The Tiananmen incident has always been a lesson to be learned: the CCP is a brutal dictatorship that will not hesitate to kill its own citizens in order to defend its power. Calls for Beijing to admit that the shooting that night was morally wrong, whether it came from home or abroad, have been rejected by Beijing. China has also resisted demands to disclose the actual death toll. Xi Jinping and other senior Communist Party officials have shown no remorse for the crackdown, but instead grew increasingly dissatisfied with the Hong Kong democracy movement. In Xinjiang and Tibet, they resort to oppression. The CCP sees calls for basic human rights as a threat to its rule.
